IOWA CITY — Southeastern Community College baseball took center stage at the University of Iowa’s Duane Banks Stadium during Senior Day Sunday.
Former SCC players Kooper Schulte, shortstop, and Caleb Wulf, first baseman, were recognized before the game against Illinois, along with 12 other teammates.
They received a framed jersey and were announced along with family members in front of a packed house.
On hand with Kooper were his parents, Justin and Tara Schulte, his sisters, Kaylor Crabtree and Kenadi Schulte, and girlfriend, Emma Starr.
Before Iowa, Kooper spent a year at SCC for the 2023-24 season under the tutelage of his father, who is the head baseball coach at SCC.
Kooper is a 2026 Brooks Wallace semifinalist. He is one of 50 players up for the prestigious top shortstop award. He has played 92 games at Iowa in the past two seasons and has a .280 career batting average.
Caleb Wulf, who was at SCC from 2022-24, was recognized with his parents Troy and Amanda.
Wulf has played in 94 games with Iowa in the past two seasons and has a .365 career batting average. He ranks 25th nationally in the hardest to strike out and 41st in batting average.
Schulte and Wulf followed their fathers at Iowa, where the elders both pitched for the Hawkeyes. The mothers also saw action on Sunday when, between innings, they removed their shoes in right field and walked back towards first base. Then the race was on to retrieve their shoes and return to the start. It was a fun moment for the players and fans.
Also on hand playing for the Hawkeyes were former Blackhawks pitcher Maddux Frese, who was at SCC from 2023-25, and outfielder Bryce Phelps, who played at SCC from 2021-23. Illinois’ second baseman Michael Farina also was an SCC player from 2023-25. He got the best of Iowa with a solo home run and an Illini 6-2 win.
SCC baseball begins the Division II Region XI Tournament play as the No. 1 seed. The Blackhawks have a first-round bye and will play their first game at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Merchants Park in Carroll.
BEES BUZZ
A few of the Hawkeyes players will become acquainted with Burlington at the end of the month when they don the Bees uniforms at Community Field for the Prospect League.
Those players are Tate Sagle, pitcher/infielder, Ty Mikkelson, pitcher, and Milo Kelley, catcher. The first Bees home game of the season is at 6:30 p.m. May 26.
