College of Charleston and Charleston Southern got together in the final midweek non-conference baseball game of the season, colliding at CSU’s Nielsen Field on May 5.

The Bucs came away with a rare win over their crosstown rivals, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Cougars with a 9-6 win.

CSU improved to 25-19 this season and won against the Cougs for only the second time in 11 games. College of Charleston dropped to 22-25 on the season.

CSU’s Kain Collins scored three runs and Alex Marot had four RBIs as the Bucs ripped off 14 hits as a team. Garrison Barile, Ethan Reader and Caden Wolfley joined Collins with two hits each.

Ethan Plyler led CofC with three hits.

Cougars’ right fielder Jake Amman, a James Island grad, led off the game with a solo homer to center to spot the Cougs to an early lead.

The lead did not last long as the Bucs tied the game with a run-scoring single by Marot with two outs in the bottom of the first.

Collins led off the bottom of the third with his second double of the game. Two outs later, Marot delivered again, this time with a two-run homer to left center and a 3-1 Bucs lead.

Dylan Johnson led off the CofC fourth with a double and later scored on Plyler’s single. The Cougs tied the score at 3 on Peyton Frehner’s RBI single, but CofC left the bases loaded in the fourth.

The Bucs added an unearned run in the fourth, taking a 4-3 lead on Blake Edgmon’s single to score Ethan Reader, who reached base on an error.

Alex LaCoste dropped a two-out bomb to left center to tie the game at 4 in the top of the fifth for the Cougars. But CSU answered with a long ball, a homer to left by Barile after two were out to regain the 5-4 lead after five innings.

CSU added a run in the sixth when Tyler Wright’s RBI single scored Wolfley, who had doubled with two outs. Reader’s two-run single pushed CSU to a 8-4 lead after seven innings.

Amman and LaCoste added run-scoring singles in the eighth to trim CSU’s lead to 8-6, but the Cougars again left two runners on base.

Collins reached base for the fourth time in the bottom of the eighth and came around to score on Marot’s sacrifice fly to center, pushing the Bucs’ lead to 9-6 heading into the ninth.

Both teams resume conference play on the road this weekend. College of Charleston will travel to Elon while CSU visits Longwood. Both teams have six regular season games remaining before their respective conference tournaments.
