If there was ever a team that needed a nice victory to close out its season, it might have been the 2025 Wilmington High baseball squad.
After a season that saw the Wildcats lose six one-run games and two two-run games, the WilmingÂton boys ended the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Mystic Valley High School in the consolation game of the Dick Scanlon Memorial Day tournament hosted by Wilmington.
Roman Synnott certainly gave the WHS coaching staff something to look forward to for next season, spinning a complete-game, two-hitter, striking out eight and walking only two.
Synnott escaped a two-out, two-on situation in the first inning when he inÂduced ground ball.
In the third, an error and a hit batsman with one out could have been trouble, but Synnott got a fielder’s choice grounder for out No. 2 and then picked off a Mystic runner to end the inning.
In the seventh, with the Wildcats up 2-0, Mystic had one last rally.
An error and a fielder’s choice grounder had two men on with one out and a grounder moved both runners into scoring position.
An RBI single made it 2-1 and an intentional walk loaded the bases, but SynÂnott struck out the final batÂter to end the game and Wilmington’s season on a high note.
Wilmington had several chances to score.
Theo Bryson doubled in the first inning and BrenÂnan Walsh drew a leadoff walk in the second.
In the third, Julian MarÂtins walked with one out and stole second before senior Ayden Balter finally broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double.
In the fourth, WilmingÂton scored again when Walsh hit a leadoff single and stole second before scoring when he stole third and raced home on an error by the catcher.
Wilmington almost adÂded to its lead in the sixth when Walsh and Connor Lovell led off with singles, but the Mystic defense escaped the inning, setting up the exciting final frame.
In the first round of the tournament, Wilmington lost to Bedford by a 3-2 score.
Bedford led 3-0 heading into Wilmington’s last at-bat.
Up until the seventh inÂning, WHS had just one hit.
In the seventh, Balter singled to lead off and Synnott walked.
A double play moved Balter to third before a Connor Lovell RBI single made it 3-1.
An error on a grounder by Ryan Gray moved runners to first and third before JR Haggerty smacÂked a double to score LovÂell and move Gray to third.
A groundout ended the game.
Balter started on the mound for Wilmington, tossing six innings and striking out eight before Haggerty pitched the seventh. Balter chalked up his 200th career strikeout in the loss.
The ’Cats ended up 3-17 with victories over ArlingÂton and Lexington this season.
