QUINCY — The Quincy Blue Devils split Wednesday’s doubleheader against Western Big 6 Conference rival Alleman, winning the first game 4-3 and falling to the Pioneers 11-10 in the second game.
With Monday’s game getting rained out, Quincy High hosted the makeup game with Alleman being the declared home team in Game One.
In the first game, both teams scored three runs in the fifth inning.
The Blue Devils scored the deciding run in the sixth inning when Logan George hit a one-out double and Cameron Lawson driving him in with a sac fly.
QHS starting pitcher James Day earned the win after pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts, while allowing six hits, no walks and three earned runs. Day went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI at the plate.
Alleman starting pitcher Adam VanMeighem was the losing pitcher after pitching six innings with three strikeouts, while allowing nine hits, four walks and four earned runs.
Lawson went 3-for-3 with a run, RBI and two stolen bases out of the leadoff spot, while catcher Mason Ritter went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBIs.
The second game was also decided by one run, but it looked like it might be a QHS rout early on after the Blue Devils scored seven runs in the first inning.
Alleman answered by scoring six runs in the top of the second inning and took a 8-7 lead in the fourth inning. The Blue Devils took a brief 10-9 lead in the fifth, but were unable to hold it.
Alleman’s Gavin Wilburn hit the go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning.
Lawson had a no decision after pitching four innings with four strikeouts, while allowing nine hits, one walk and five earned runs. He went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases at the plate.
Blue Devils reliever Chase Saalborn was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.2 innings with one strikeout, while allowing four hits, three walks and three earned runs. Shane Pillars pitched a third of an inning in relief.
Alleman also used three pitchers, with reliever Kelly Honert getting the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief.
QHS first baseman Noah Wells went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, run, three RBIs and two stolen bases, while Day went 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI, stolen base and two runs.
George went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs, while Jacob Salisbury went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and an RBI.
Up next for QHS (16-9-1) is a home game against WB6 rival Geneseo at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
