Well, that win on Monday was nice. The only problem is it somehow feels like ages ago as the SF Giants lost the last two games of their series against the San Diego Padres to fall to an ugly 14-23 on the season. The Giants already cashed in their emergency move by calling up Bryce Eldridge and Jesus Rodriguez. It’s too early to say that move didn’t work, but if this sort of play continues the Giants need to go a step further.

At some point, and it should probably be quite soon unless things turn around, the Giants need to start demoting guys to Triple-A. No, they won’t be sending Willy Adames or Rafael Devers to Sacramento but there are several players who should be sent down to Triple-A to send a message that poor performance will not be tolerated indefinitely.

3 SF Giants who should be demoted to send a messageRyan Walker

Having already basically lost the closer role after several blown saves, Ryan Walker is now even struggling in low-leverage appearances. Manager Tony Vitello put Walker into a 3-1 ballgame against the Padres on Wednesday and he gave up a two-run home run to expand the lead to 5-1. He now has a 5.52 ERA on the season.

With how anemic San Francisco’s offense is, two runs and four runs both feel like insurmountable deficits but it’s probably time to give Walker a wake-up call because he’s been given way too much leash for too long.

It’s understandable why the Giants keep trying with him. The talent is undeniable when he’s on and back in 2024 he was one of the filthiest relievers in baseball but he hasn’t consistently been that dominant in a long time.

He has minor league options remaining so it’s time to send him down and tell him that he needs to clean up his command before he can be back in the big leagues. The Giants need to start holding guys accountable and this move would do just that.

Call up Michael Fulmer or Dylan Smith to take his place since both guys are pitching much better in Triple-A.

Patrick Bailey

Gold Gloves don’t look so shiny when a player can’t hit, and catcher Patrick Bailey is really struggling at the plate. He’s hitting .146/.213/.183 with one home run and five runs batted in. On Wednesday he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and really just looks lost at the plate right now.

It’s clear the Giants are already pivoting away from him in favor of Jesus Rodriguez and whenever Daniel Susac comes back from injury the Giants should demote Bailey to the minors since he still has an option remaining.

Bailey may be an asset defensively but the cold bat just can’t be tolerated anymore.

Christian Koss

This one may seem a little mean because Christian Koss has barely gotten any opportunities this season. He has just one hit in 13 at-bats. I like Koss. He’s a scrappy, useful player to have but he is ill-suited for this Giants roster. He deserves to be getting consistent at-bats somewhere so they should send him to Triple-A.

Maybe they should call up someone like Victor Bericoto. He could serve as a designated hitter, play first base, or play in one of the corner outfield spots. He’s hitting an impressive .314/.366/.449 with three home runs and 20 runs batted in for Sacramento.

The Giants shook things up on Monday by bringing up Eldridge and Rodriguez, but this feels like the kind of season where they’re going to have to keep on shaking the Etch a Sketch until it’s broken so why not send a message by demoting some guys? Maybe it will bring about some better, or at least more interesting, results.
