The Seattle Mariners now have two of the top 10 prospects in baseball, according to one of the sport’s leading publications.
In the May update of Baseball America’s Top 100 prospect rankings, Mariners shortstop prospect Colt Emerson moved up to No. 4 and M’s pitching prospect Kade Anderson surged up to No. 9. Emerson was No. 7 in BA’s previous Top 100 back in April, while Anderson was No. 23.
The other three Mariners prospects in BA’s updated Top 100 are right-handed pitcher Ryan Sloan (No. 20), slugging outfielder Lazaro Montes (No. 60) and second baseman Michael Arroyo (No. 87).
Anderson’s climb comes amid a scorching start to his professional career.
A 21-year-old left-hander who was the No. 3 overall pick in last summer’s MLB Draft, Anderson has a sparkling 0.60 ERA through his first six starts with Double-A Arkansas this season. He has an eye-popping 47 strikeouts and just five walks in 30 innings, along with a 0.67 WHIP and a 44.3% strikeout rate.
Emerson, meanwhile, is slashing .246/.333/.475 with six home runs, one triple, seven doubles and an .808 OPS in 31 games with Triple-A Tacoma. The 20-year-old shortstop missed four games in April with a wrist injury and struggled a bit after his return, but has homered in two of his past three games.
Emerson, a 2023 first-round pick, signed a reported eight-year, $95 million contract extension with Seattle in March. At the time, it was the largest-ever deal for a player who had yet to reach the major leagues.
