A 10-run bottom of the seventh inning resulted in a 12-3 loss for the San Diego Padres against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, Tuesday. It was the first time this season the best bullpen in baseball looked pedestrian.

First awful bullpen day of the year for the #Padres

Adrian Morejon started the inning on the mound for the Padres. He replaced Michael King, who completed six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He also came out of the game with a 3-2 lead.

Morejon allowed a double to Jasson Dominguez to start the inning. He advanced to third on an Anthony Volpe single to put runners on the corners. Wells recorded his first hit of the inning with an RBI-single to score Dominguez and Volpe moved to second, making the score, 3-3.

Morejon got an out on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Oswaldo Cabrera, who popped the bunt attempt into the air and it was caught by Manny Machado. A double steal put Volpe and Wells at third and second base, respectively. Morejon then intentionally walked pinch hitter Paul Goldschmidt to load the bases.

Wandy Peralta came in to replace Morejon and issued a walk, on four pitches, to Trent Grisham that gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Ben Rice followed with a one-out double down the right field line and New York took a 6-3 lead. Aaron Judge was intentionally walked by Peralta to reload the bases with Grisham at third and Rice at second.

Cody Bellinger hit an RBI-single to make the score 7-3. The second out of the inning came on a Dominguez fly ball to left. Volpe then added a run with a single on a sharp ground ball to third. Machado was unable to make the play and the Yankees went up 8-3.

Wells stepped to the plate and put any hopes the Padres had of a comeback out of reach. Wells hit a grand slam to right field that pushed the score to 12-3 and all but ended the game. Cabrera followed the home run with a groundout to put an end to the inning.

San Diego went down in order in the eighth and sent four batters to the plate in the ninth, thanks to an error, and the game ended with the Padres taking the loss and ending their six-game win streak.

Jackson Merrill returned to the lineup for San Diego and recorded two hits in four at-bats. He also scored a run.

The Padres will try to win the series against the Yankees, Wednesday at 4:05 p.m.
