DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran major-league reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor-league deal and added him to the roster at Triple-A Toledo.

Edwards, 34, has pitched in parts of 12 MLB seasons, including a six-day stint with the New York Mets last month.

Edwards struck out 11 over six innings in two appearances for the Mets. He cleared waivers and rejected his outright assignment for free agency on May 3.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 165 pounds, Edwards picked up the nickname the String Bean Slinger early in his career.

Edwards was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2011 in the 48th round (the 1,464th overall pick) and made his debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2015.

He was a key member of the Cubs’ bullpen in their 2016 World Series championship season. Edwards retired the first two batters in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 7 before giving way to Mike Montgomery, who retired the final batter and earned the save.
