Houston AstrosYordan Alvarez is quickly becoming one of the most valuable players in the sport. A hot surge in 2026 with a poor Astros team is starting to form a lot of trade rumors for the left-handed slugger. Could the Astros actually trade him? Bob Nightengale gives his opinion on what a trade package could even look like in his latest MLB Trade Deadline article.

Nightengale shares two quotes proving his case, one from a veteran scout and another from an executive.

“He’s the greatest pure hitter I’ve seen in this game since Barry Bonds,” one veteran scout said. “This guy is unbelievable. He’s the best pure hitter in the game, and it’s not close.” Said one executive: “If they traded him, I think they’d get a better package than what the Nationals got for Juan Soto.”

“Realistically, there’s little chance that Alvarez would actually be moved, but if the Astros are offered such a deal, it would be malpractice for the team not to at least listen,” Nightengale wrote.

The San Diego Padres traded James Wood, CJ Abrams, and McKenzie Gore for Juan Soto. As good as those players have been in their careers, the Nationals still haven’t been able to do anything since. Gore is now in Texas, and Abrams is hearing trade rumors circulate his name as well.

The Astros were a very bad team early in Jose Altuve’s career. They went through a rebuilding stage and turned it into a World Series-winning organization. The ballclub definitely does not want to go through that again, but they may be forced to with the lack of success as of late. Trading away Alvarez, who the Astros got from the Los Angeles Dodgers, would allow this ballclub to hit reset with likely a ton of young talent.
