LOS ANGELES, CA—As the Los Angeles Dodgers await the official announcement of All-Star shortstop Mookie Betts’s activation, we now have what is likely the corresponding move.
According to Jack Harris of the California Post, the Dodgers are set to option rookie infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The news comes as no surprise; however, Freeland was in a trio of possible names to bite the bullet on the Dodgers’ 26-man roster with Betts’ activation, including Santiago Espinal and fan-favorite Hyeseong Kim.
Freeland will go down after struggling in his first shot at an everyday role, hitting just .235 with a .646 OPS in 33 games as part of the Dodgers ’ platoon at second base with veteran infielder Miguel Rojas.
Freeland, a switch-hitting former third-round pick, has struggled to gain traction at the major-league level since debuting midway through last season. He hit just .190 over 29 games and was ultimately sent back to Triple-A in early September, where he finished out the year.
The Dodgers could’ve opted to keep both Kim and Freeland at the big league level, but a part of their thinking was giving both players ample opportunities for everyday playing time, something they won’t get with Betts in the fold.
