With players like Francisco Lindor and Luis Robert Jr. already on the shelf, the New York Mets aren’t looking to pick up any more injuries. But then catcher Francisco Alvarez was forced to leave Tuesday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers.

The catcher is now set to undergo imaging on Wednesday, after which the Mets will have more information. Alvarez was able to leave the game under his own power, but the fact he had to exit at all will have New York holding their breath.

Prior to the injury, the catcher had gone 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and RBI. He entered the game hitting .236 with four home runs and nine RBIs over his first 36 games. His numbers don’t immediately jump off the page, but the Mets are counting on Alvarez to be a key run producer when healthy.

Should the backstop be forced to miss time, New York would turn to backup Luis Torrens. He recently signed a two-year extension with the franchise. Now, he may be pushed into the spotlight in a more serious way than expected.

But nothing will be set in stone until Alvarez undergoes further tests. What his imaging reveals will determine the catcher’s timeline. Perhaps the only silver lining to Alvarez leaving the game is that the Mets came away with a 10-2 win.
