The Texas Rangers retooled their roster this past offseason, and one of their biggest moves was trading veteran second baseman Marcus Semien to the New York Mets in exchange for Brandon Nimmo.

After one month of play, it is safe to say Texas is pleased with how the deal has played out so far. The 33-year-old outfielder has posted a .276 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, .773 OPS, four home runs and 12 RBIs through his first 39 games.

Nimmo has been a reliable force at the top of the order, exactly what the Rangers hoped for. Still, Texas has been underwhelming overall, entering Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks three games under .500 at 19-22.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Nimmo appeared to injure himself while leaving Tuesday’s game early. He was in the midst of a productive day at the plate before going down, collecting three hits in four plate appearances, scoring once and helping Texas take an early lead.

The injury occurred during his third hit of the game, an infield single. While Nimmo beat out the throw, he landed awkwardly on his left foot and immediately began to limp as he returned to first base.

He stayed in the game briefly after being checked by trainers, but moments later he was removed and replaced by Sam Haggerty as a pinch-runner. After the game, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker announced that Nimmo has a sprained left ankle.

Fortunately, the X-rays did not reveal anything serious and he will potentially be listed as day-to-day moving forward. “He didn’t want to come out of the game,” Schumaker added (h/t Shawn McFarland of Dallas Morning News).

If Nimmo is forced to miss time, it would be another blow to the Rangers lineup. Outfielder Wyatt Langford is already on the injured list with no timetable to return, and Haggerty would likely see increased playing time if Nimmo requires a stint on the IL.

Texas is trying to climb back to .500, and losing one of their most consistent bats would make that path even tougher.
