Paul Skenes may not have thrown a no-hitter on Tuesday, but he still found another way to write his name into the record books.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner was in top form against the Colorado Rockies, firing eight shutout innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ 3-1 victory.

Skenes started the game on fire, striking out the first six batters he faced. He struck out the side again in the sixth and did not allow a hit until the seventh when Mickey Moniak finally reached him for a one-out single.

Skenes completed the eighth before turning the game over to Gregory Soto, who notched his fourth save of the season despite allowing a run. Skenes finished with 10 strikeouts, a season high for him.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes became the first Pirates pitcher in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to strike out the side at least three times in a game.

The win improved Skenes’ record to 6-2 and lowered his ERA to 1.98. He’s opened May with 16 straight scoreless innings to begin the month and has allowed just six earned runs over his last eight starts combined.

The two-time All-Star will try to keep rolling in his next scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies at home on Sunday.
