The possibility of Manhattan hosting a state baseball tournament is back on the table.
KSHSAA announced this week that if Kansas baseball is selected to host an NCAA regional, the 4A, 3A and 2-1A state baseball tournaments would shift from Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence to Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.
The NCAA will announce regional host sites May 24.
According to D1Baseball’s latest Field of 64 projections, No. 14-ranked Kansas remains projected as one of the NCAA’s 16 regional hosts despite being swept at home by No. 9 West Virginia last weekend.
The move would not impact Manhattan High’s postseason path in 6A, as that classification’s state tournament remains scheduled for Eck Stadium in Wichita.
Softball state tournament sites would remain unchanged as well, with 4A, 3A and 2-1A continuing at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence and 5A and 6A staying at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita.
KSHSAA said the schedule for the smaller-class state tournaments will not change, only shifting locations to Manhattan if necessary. Quarterfinal games for 4A, 3A and 2-1A baseball are still slated for May 25 at neutral sites across the state, including Emporia, Salina and Overland Park, with higher-seeded teams playing closer to home.
If moved to Manhattan, semifinals for 2-1A and 3A would begin May 27 at Tointon Family Stadium, followed by 4A semifinals and 2-1A/3A consolation games on May 28. Championship games for all three classifications would be played May 29.
Several area teams remain alive in the smaller-class postseason picture.
In 4A, Rock Creek enters regional play next week as the No. 1 seed in the East bracket with a 21-4 record, while Wamego sits at No. 4 at 18-6.
Council Grove, meanwhile, is in the midst of its 3A playoff run as the top seed in its regional. The Braves improved to 24-1 after opening postseason play with a 15-0 win over Herington.
Wabaunsee’s season ended in regional play with an 8-7 loss to Doniphan West, while Riley County (3-24) fell in the opening round to top-seeded Jefferson West. Blue Valley-Randolph (1-16) did not qualify for the postseason.
