The St. Louis Cardinals host the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium to begin a three-game interleague set on Friday, May 15, 2026, marking the start of Major League Baseball‘s “Rivalry Weekend.” St. Louis enters the series with a 25-18 record after finishing a 4-3 road trip.
Manager Oliver Marmol has led the Cardinals to a strong start after the team missed the postseason for three consecutive years. The club recently secured a 5-4 comeback victory against the Athletics, scoring twice in the ninth inning on Thursday.
“That was a tough series, coming from San Diego to playing here,” stated Oliver Marmol, Cardinals Manager. “That was one of our most exhausting series, so it feels great to be able to take two (vs. the A’s).”

Right-hander Dustin May will take the mound for St. Louis, carrying a 3-4 record and a 4.85 ERA. Since signing in December, May has shown improvement, posting a 2.55 ERA over his last six starts despite a career 8.22 ERA against Kansas City.

The Royals, currently 19-25, arrive in St. Louis on a four-game losing streak following a sweep by the Chicago White Sox. Michael Wacha, who played for the Cardinals from 2013 to 2019, will start for Kansas City with a 4-2 record and 2.63 ERA.
“I feel like there was a lot to like, for sure,” said Michael Wacha, Royals Pitcher. “I felt like I was getting ahead a lot, mixed in a couple four-pitch walks which are never fun, but I got some quick outs, was able to pitch out of some jams, avoid some traffic and get deep into the game.”

Wacha remains undefeated against his former club, holding a 4-0 career record when facing St. Louis. Royals management expressed confidence in the veteran’s consistency and ability to throw strikes effectively every fifth day.
“He throws a ton of strikes. You’re not going to stay around and pitch as effectively for as long as he has without throwing strikes,” noted Matt Quatraro, Royals Manager. “You can’t take it for granted. He takes the ball every fifth day, and he’s getting better as he goes. You see him pitch differently to different guys, but he always has the fastball and changeup. He can lean on those anytime he needs to.”
St. Louis outfielder Jordan Walker enters the contest as a top performer, ranking eighth in MLB with a .945 OPS and 12 home runs. Rookie JJ Wetherholt also features prominently in the Cardinals’ lineup, though he has struggled this month with a .213 batting average.

According to Yahoo Sports, the Cardinals’ bullpen currently holds the fifth-worst ERA in baseball at 4.70, led by Riley O’Brien who has 13 saves. For fans in the local territory, MLB is providing a free broadcast of the series via Cardinals.TV throughout the weekend.
