The Milwaukee Brewers (25-17) sit only two and a half games behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central after recently sweeping the New York Yankees and taking two of three versus the San Diego Padres. They have done all that without one of their most valuable hitters, as Christian Yelich continues to recover following various injuries. Fans will be happy to learn of his latest progress.
The 2018 National League MVP and three-time Silver Slugger will engage in a full pregame workout, per MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. Yelich will not play versus the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, but if all goes well, he will have a chance to compete in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Milwaukee has proven it can create runs at less than full strength, but a strong veteran presence could certainly help. The 34-year-old designated hitter/outfielder is the most accomplished player on this squad, posting a .285 batting average and .838 OPS in 7,087 MLB plate appearances.
Yelich missed a month of time with a hamstring injury and then started experiencing back discomfort after just returning on May 12. The Brewers do not want the two-time batting champion to be in and out of the lineup. They need him to be healthy for the summer stretch. The team is closely monitoring his improvement and will wait a tad longer before giving him the green light.
Christian Yelich will go through his routine and see if he can take an official at-bat versus the Twins before Milwaukee heads to Chicago for a highly intriguing series.
