Former Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star and utility player Josh Harrison announced his retirement Saturday, 14 years to the day after he made his Major League Baseball debut.Â
Harrison, 37, previously played in 40 games with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023 during his final stint at the big league level.
Harrison earned spots on the 2014 and 2017 National League All-Star Game teams. He was a member of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Pirates’ playoff squads. In 2024, Harrison hit .315 with 38 doubles, 13 home runs, 52 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. He batted .272 with 26 doubles, 16 homers, 47 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 2017.Â
He was drafted in the sixth round in 2008 by the Chicago Cubs out of the University of Cincinnati. Harrison was traded to the Pirates in 2009 with right-handed pitchers Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio from Chicago for left-handers Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow.
Harrison compiled 1,080 hits, 500 runs, 388 RBIs and 91 stolen bases over 1,208 career games. He played for Pittsburgh (2011-18), Detroit (2019), Washington (2020-21), Oakland (2021), the Chicago White Sox (2022) and Philadelphia (2023).Â
Harrison made 646 appearances at second base over his career. He also logged games at third base (338), left field (78), right field (71), shortstop (47), pitcher (six), center field (two) and first base (one). He was a designated hitter 14 times and pinched hit on 147 occasions.Â
He was a member of the 2010 Altoona Curve team that won the Eastern League title.Â
