The latest Crosstown Classic between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox delivered drama far beyond the MLB scoreboard on Sunday.
Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong was caught on camera shouting an explicit response toward a heckling White Sox fan during the Cubs’ wild 9-8 extra-innings loss at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The heated exchange happened in the fifth inning after Crow-Armstrong failed to make a difficult leaping catch on a two-run double by Miguel Vargas. The play tied the game at 4-4 and shifted momentum toward the White Sox.

As Crow-Armstrong regrouped near the outfield wall, a female fan seated close to the fence reportedly yelled, “You suck,” while flashing thumbs-down gestures.
The Cubs center fielder did not ignore it. He walked toward the stands and shouted back, “Suck my f***ing d***, b***h,” in a moment that went viral across social media.

After the game, Crow-Armstrong defended himself when asked about the incident.
“Some lady decided to start talking s**t, and I felt the need to say it back,” he told ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers.

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s response came during the Cubs’ heated rivalry series
The exchange reflected how tense the series became between the city rivals. Crow-Armstrong was also involved in another confrontation earlier in the weekend, reportedly warning a separate group of heckling White Sox fans from the on-deck circle.

The atmosphere matched the intensity on the field. The White Sox erased deficits multiple times before rookie catcher Edgar Quero hit a walk-off two-run homer in the 10th inning. The victory capped a strong homestand for the White Sox and handed the Cubs their sixth loss in eight games.

Crow-Armstrong’s reaction will likely divide opinion across baseball. Players hear constant abuse from opposing crowds, especially in rivalry games, but public confrontations rarely help the situation. At the same time, the 24-year-old has built his reputation on emotion and edge, traits that fuel his aggressive style in center field.

However, through 47 games, Crow-Armstrong has delivered a mixed performance for the Cubs. He is batting with an average of .234 with five home runs, 20 RBIs, and a .688 OPS. Despite offensive inconsistency and 48 strikeouts, Crow-Armstrong remains valuable defensively and continues to help Chicago as they hold first place in the NL Central with a 29-18 record.
Still, incidents like this one can become distractions for Crow-Armstrong, especially during a rough stretch for a contender expected to compete deep into October.
