ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves on Monday activated outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. from a two-week stint on the injured list. One day later, the team placed catcher Drake Baldwin on the 10-day injured list with a strained oblique ahead of its second game against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.
The Braves promoted Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move, and he’ll share catching duties with veteran Sandy León moving forward. Sean Murphy was placed on the injured list with a fractured finger last week.
Baldwin was replaced by León in the sixth inning of Monday’s 12-0 loss after lining out in the top half of the frame. The reigning Rookie of the Year was in the midst of a sophomore surge, hitting .303 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs and a .932 OPS in 48 games.
The team didn’t give a timeframe regarding Baldwin’s return.
In addition, the Braves released left-hander Aaron Bummer, activated left-handed reliever Dylan Dodd (left thoracic spine inflammation) from the injured list, demoted rookie starter JR Ritchie and promoted right-hander Victor Mederos from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Dodd, who had been sidelined since May 3, gives the Braves another left-handed option out of the bullpen as Bummer departs while making $9.5 million this season. Bummer issued five walks and allowed six earned runs in Monday’s loss, which included a grand slam by Javier Sanoja and a solo homer from Xavier Edwards in back-to-back plate appearances. The 32-year-old posted a 7.63 ERA in 19 appearances for Atlanta this season.
With Ritchie no longer in the rotation mix, the Braves could continue leaning on Martín Pérez — Tuesday’s scheduled starter — as a fixture in the rotation. The 35-year-old owns a 2.25 ERA across nine appearances, including five starts.
Didier Fuentes, who has recently worked out of the bullpen, could also reenter the conversation as a starting option.
