It’s May 21, and the Chicago White Sox currently hold the second wild card spot in the American League playoff picture.

They have a 2.0-game cushion on a playoff spot nearly a third of the way through the 2026 season. That’s not at all what most fans or national pundits had in mind when they looked ahead to this season, but it’s reality. And week after week, the White Sox continue to show signs that this is no fluke.

They have unlikely heroes stepping up in big spots. They win close games. They have a formidable trio anchoring the lineup and consistently driving in runs. The clubhouse culture couldn’t be better. This is who they are and who they can be moving forward.

And the betting odds in Las Vegas are finally beginning to reflect as much.

The White Sox opened 2026 with +10000 odds to win the AL Central on BetMGM. They’re currently at just +500, with the second-best odds in the division behind the favorite Cleveland Guardians.

According to the metrics on FanGraphs, the White Sox still only have an 11.1 percent chance to make the playoffs, which is the 13th-highest odds in the American League, only better than the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels.

FanGraphs has the White Sox with an estimated win total between 74 and 75 games, which would be a disappointment now that we’ve seen this team’s potential, but would have been an absolute win had you polled a majority of White Sox fans prior to the season.

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical that this team can sustain its success over the course of a 162-game season. They may not have the pitching depth to get through a regular season without seriously slumping, and the schedule gets much harder in the early weeks of June. But should Chicago emerge from that stretch of schedule still holding a playoff spot, there should be no doubt that this team is legit.

After all, we saw the Cincinnati Reds make the NL Wild Card in 2025 with 83 wins on the season. The AL may just be having a down year, and it’s not unrealistic to think a team that can play a few games over .500 could find itself sneaking into the playoff picture.

The White Sox still have plenty to prove, and the skepticism is understandable given where this organization has been over the last few years. But they don’t need to be perfect to stay in the race.
