FREMONT — Evergreen’s baseball team, the No. 3 seed in the Division VI Fremont Ross District, scored in every inning except two to topple No. 2-seeded Huron 9-0 in a district semifinal on Wednesday at Louise Ann Lease Memorial Field in Fremont.
The Vikings (13-10) will next face No. 1 Gibsonburg, which bested No. 6 Castalia Margaretta 4-3 in Wednesday’s opener in Fremont, in a Division VI district final on Friday at Louise Ann Lease Memorial Field.
Huron ended the season 12-11.
Evergreen quickly got on the board in the top of the first frame when leadoff hitter Colton Robertson reached third via a throwing error. No. 2 hitter Layne Vance laid down a sacrifice bunt that plated Robertson and also gave the Vikings a 1-0 edge.
Bryce Bolger, the No. 3 hitter, then drew a walk and scored when No 5. hitter Blake Boucher smacked a one-out RBI single to left for a 2-0 Evergreen lead.
Austin Burghardt, the No. 8 hitter, gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead when he scored on an error in the second inning, and in the third inning, cleanup hitter Chris Shrader scored on an error while Burghardt whacked an RBI infield single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Shrader hit an RBI double to center and Troy Manz an infield RBI single in the fourth for a 7-0 Evergreen advantage.
“We did good today,” said Manz, who helped pace the Vikings offensively by going 2-for-2 (two singles) with two RBI and two runs. “Our jobs are to get on base, and we can trust our teammates to hit us around so that was my job today and coach put me into a position to do that.”
The last two runs for the Vikings came in the sixth when John Herdman, the No. 7 hitter, hit an RBI single to center and Burghardt again tallied an RBI single to left that gave the contest its final score.
“That’s kind of our approach,” said Evergreen coach Chris Owens, whose team tallied 11 hits and turned two double plays with no errors defensively. “Huron’s a good team and we knew watching them with some of their stats that they did last weekend they’re not going away and you can never get enough.”
Burghardt (two singles, two RBI, run), Bolger (single, three runs), Shrader (two doubles, two runs, RBI) and Robertson (single, run) rounded out a strong outing for the Vikings.
Nolan Hudik got the complete-game shutout for Evergreen. He struck out seven, walked four and gave up four hits.
“I did a really good job today, but it’s also my team on the field,” Hudik said. “The defense did a really good job today of backing me up.”
Paul Maloney (single) suffered the loss for the Tigers as he struck out three but gave up two walks, four earned runs and six hits in three frames.
Sam Cox (double, single) and Ben Davis (single) contributed to Huron’s offensive efforts.
“We’re excited about this finish and the outcome, but at midnight it resets,” Owens said. “Tomorrow’s a new day and we get back to work. Gibsonburg’s a great opponent, No. 1 in our district, and you don’t get there by playing average baseball.
“We know we’re going to have to bring it and continue with the same tempo, throw strikes, play good defense and manufacture runs when we get the opportunity.”
