The top 2 seeds in the eight-team, double-elimination Class 3A baseball state tournament each went a perfect 2-0 Friday in Greeley.
Top-seeded University (25-2) picked up a 6-2 first-round win against No. 8 Wellington (15-11) and a 6-0 shutout of No. 4 The Classical Academy (19-7) at Butch Butler Field.
Meanwhile, across town at University’s Tom Roche Field, second-seeded Eaton (23-3) earned a 7-0 win against No. 7 Elizabeth (18-8) and a 3-2 victory against No. 6 D’Evelyn (19-8).
That sets up a clash between the Bulldogs and Reds, heated rivals, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Butch Butler Field. The matchup pits the last two teams unbeaten in the state tournament. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the finals May 30 at Butch Butler.
Meanwhile, in the southern part of the state, Dayspring Christian (17-6) — seeded fifth in the 2A state tournament — secured a 6-2 win against No. 4 Denver Christian (17-9) before falling, 12-3, to top-seeded Forge Christian (25-2) at the Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.
The Eagles drop to the lower bracket. At noon Saturday, they’ll play in an elimination game against whichever squad emerges from a 9:30 a.m. game between No. 3 Yuma (21-5) and No. 7 Peyton (18-6).
