WHITEHALL — Whitehall and Shelby split a softball doubleheader May 20, and even though the Tiger’s Jayna Burmeister had 15 outs, the Vikings won Game 1, 3-1, and the Tigers won in Game 2, 9-7.

The Vikings and Tigers both had strong efforts in the pitching circle in Game 1.

Shelby started things off in the top of the first inning going 1-2-3.

However, Whitehall scored in the bottom of the first, and it came on a groundout.

Janie Fagan grounded out, but brought in Leatrea.

Shelby got a single from Emma Stovall, but failed to score.

In the bottom of the second inning, Lillian Nicholson came home on a passed ball.

Jordan Wolting singled in the top of third, but couldn’t bring her home.

And in the bottom of the third, following a triple by Kayden Johnson, Janie Fagan grounded out, allowing Johnson to score.

Shelby got their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Emma Stovall hit a double, and then scored on an error by catcher Janie Fagan.

And that’s how the game ended, as neither team did any further scoring.

For Whitehall, Johnson led the way with one run on one hit.

Janie Fagan had two runs-batted-in and one walk.

Nicholson scored one run; Leatrea scored a run and one walk; Ryleigh Smith came up with one hit and one walk, and Toree Carlson had one hit.

Madison Jones had one walk and one strikeout; Emily Ames had one strikeout, and Peyton Schult struck out twice.

Leatrea went the distance as she pitched six innings, giving up four hits, one run and six strikeouts.

In Game 2, in the first inning, the Tigers got on the scoreboard first when Emma Stovall reached first on a Whitehall error, bringing in Burmeister.

Then Jaedyn Allen grounded out, but Jordan Wolting scored.

Hali Hayes singled, bringing in Stovall.

In the bottom of the first, following an error that enabled Leatrea to reach first, and two singles later, Leatrea scored, and Nicholson grounded out, but Leatrea scored.

And then Michaelsen singled, bringing in Fagan.

That tied the score at 3-3.

In the top of the second inning, the Tigers broke the tie when Burmiester singled, and Wolting also singled, scoring Burmeister.

In the bottom of the inning, Whitehall tied the score again after getting two walks from Audrey Burrous and Allie Fagan, and Leatrea hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jones, who came in as a courtesy runner for Allie Fagan.

Then they took the lead when Janie Fagan, who came back into the game, reaching first on an error by Shelby’s shortstop Hali Hayes, with Jones getting the run.

At that time, Whitehall held a 5-4 lead.

In the top of the third, Shelby’s Hayes was hit by a pitch, then scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Whitehall got two walks, but did not score.

Shelby went 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth.

Whitehall got a walk in the bottom of the inning, but hit into a double play that Allen turned to first baseman Izzy Rudat to retire Ryleigh Smith.

Janie Fagan was out at second on the play.

In the top of the fifth, Shelby got two more runs.

Hayes started things off with a single, and Ciara Anzaldua reached first on an error by the Vikings’ second baseman.

Anzaldua then scored when Brynlee Myers hit a ground ball but reached first base on an error by the Whitehall second baseman.

Whitehall’s Carlson reached first base in the bottom of the fifth on an error by the Tigers’ Hayes, but the Vikings did not score.

Shelby scored their final two runs in the top of the sixth when Burmeister walked, and Wolting grounded out, but Burmeister went to third on an error by Whitehall’s first baseman, and scored on the same error.

Stovall then stole home.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings scored the game’s final runs when Johnson grounded out, and Leatrea scored on an error by Rudat, and Payton Schultz also scored.

For Shelby, Burmeister scored three runs on one hit and had two walks.

Hayes scored two runs on two hits and had one RBI.

Wolting scored one run on one hit, with one RBI and one walk.

Stovall scored two runs, with one walk and one strikeout.

Daniella Zarraga got one hit, one run and stuck out once, and Allen had one RBI and one strikeout.

Myers got one hit and Rudat had one strikeout.

Wolting pitched the entire six innings, giving up five hits, seven runs, two earned runs, and two strikeouts.

For Whitehall, Leatrea scored two runs with one strikeout.

Janie Fagan had one run on two hits, one RBI, and two walks.

Michaelsen had one hit and one RBI; Aubrey Burrous scored one run and walked twice, and Allie Fagan had one run and three walks.

Smith had one hit.

Leatrea took the loss as she went the entire six innings, giving up nine runs on six hits, three earned runs, and five strikeouts.
