In a busy week for the Wilmington High baseball team, the Wildcats chalked up their second win of the season against Watertown while also facing Reading, Burlington and Wakefield.
On Sunday, Wilmington dropped a 12-5 decision to Wakefield.
Will Poyant was 1 for 3 and drove in two runs for Wilmington, Theo Bryson was 2 for 4 and scored a run and Aidan Harris also had an RBI.
Other hits for the ’Cats came from Andrew Poyant and Sean O’Brien. John Roofe walked twice and scored a run.
In a 7-2 loss in Burlington on Friday, Wilmington led 2-0 early against a surging Red Devil squad.
Julian Martins led off the game for WHS with a single up the middle before Bryson’s base hit put runners on first and second.
With one out, an error scored Martins and moved Bryson to third before Ryan Gray’s single to right made it 2-0.
The day started great for the Wildcats defensively as well as Burlington went down 1-2-3 in the first with Martins making two solid plays on grounders to shortstop and JR Haggerty earned a strikeout.
The ’Cats almost added to their lead in the second.
Harris singled and Davio Dicenso walked with one out. Wilmington had runners on second and third with two outs before a ground out ended the inning.
Jackson Hegarty had an infield hit in the fourth and Bryson had a base hit in the fifth before another good chance to score in the seventh when Hegarty walked to lead off and Harris was hit by a pitch, but the Burlington defense ended up keep Wilmington off of the scoreboard.
Haggerty pitched into the fifth for the Wildcats before Martins threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Before Burlington, the Wildcats edged Watertown, 7-6.
Wilmington scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Roman Synnott and Gray opened the inning with walks and Will Poyant was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
Noah Titterington then drew a walk, forcing in the winning run.
It was truly a walk off victory.
Wilmington scored in every inning except the second.
In the first, Bryson walked and Synnott singled before Gray scored Bryson with a sacrifice fly.
Bryson scored again in the third when he singled and then scored on a Watertown error on a grounder by Gray.
Andrew Poyant hit an RBI single in the fourth and in a two-run fifth inning, Martins and Bryson singled before Martins scored on a sacrifice fly by Synnott and Bryson scored on a wild pitch.
Andrew Poyant scored in the sixth. He singled with two outs, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and raced home on another wild pitch.
The Wildcats play Wakefield on Tuesday and Concord-Carlisle on Wednesday before finishing the season hosting a Memorial Day tournament. Saturday, WHS plays Newburyport in the first round of the tournament at 10 a.m.
