Charlotte Knights 5, Memphis Redbirds 3 (11 innings) (Statcast box)
Despite a shaky start from Tyler Schweitzer, the Knights (16-18) rallied for an extra-innings walk-off. Schweitzer, who has struggled since his promotion to Charlotte, surrendered three runs in the very first inning when Thomas Saggese launched a three-run jack for Memphis. However, the righthander managed to settle down and kept the Redbirds off the board for the next 3 2⁄3 innings. The six pen arms that came out in relief held the Redbirds hitless for the rest of the contest.
The Knights’ offense remained quiet until the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Oscar Colás smacked a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Dominic Fletcher struck out, Corey Julks delivered an RBI single to bring Colás home. Then, guess what? Tim Elko plated Julks with a double of his own to pull Charlotte within one run. CALL HIM UP ALREADY! It’s insane.
Memphis held on to their slim 3-2 lead until the bottom of the eighth. Julks drew a walk and promptly stole third base. With one out, Omar Narváez singled him in to tie the game at three apiece.
With the score deadlocked after nine innings, it was time for ghost runner baseball! Neither team could capitalize in the 10th. However, in the bottom of the 11th, with Colás as the free runner on second, Fletcher, looking for his first hit of the night, stepped up and blasted a game-winning two-run rocket over the left field wall. GAME OVER.

Columbus Clingstones 4, Birmingham Barons 3
The Birmingham Barons (14-13) fell short tonight, dropping a close one that went back and forth all evening. Despite taking an early lead, the Barons couldn’t hold off a resilient Columbus squad that capitalized on key opportunities.
Birmingham drew first blood in the top of the third. With DJ Gladney on second and one out, Adam Hackenberg grounded a single to left field, bringing Gladney home and putting the Barons ahead 1-0.
Columbus tied the game off Barons’ starter Noah Schultz in the bottom of the third in dramatic fashion. Chicago’s No. 1 prospect found himself in a bit of a jam when, with two outs and a runner on second, David McCabe blasted a triple to right. Adam Zebrowski followed up with a double to left, scoring McCabe. Drew Compton was then tagged out at home on a heads-up play by the Barons’ defense, preventing further damage.
The lead swung back to Birmingham in the top of the fourth when Ryan Galanie launched a solo blast, making it 2-1. But the Clingstones answered immediately in the bottom half. With two outs, Geraldo Quintero connected for his third round-tripper of the season, knotting the score at 2-2.

Columbus then took their first lead of the night later in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and Cody Milligan on second, Cal Conley hit a ground ball to shortstop that deflected off the third baseman, allowing Milligan to score and putting the Clingstones ahead 3-2. That brought Schlutz’s night to a close as the hurler went four innings, giving up three runs on five hits with five walks and two Ks. Overall, the big southpaw struggled with his command, throwing only 45 of his 80 pitches for strikes.
The Barons battled back in the top of the sixth. Wilfred Veras singled home William Bergolla, who had reached on an error, tying the game once again at 3-3. However, the momentum was short-lived as Galanie followed with a line drive into a double play, stifling the rally.
The decisive blow came in the bottom of the sixth when Quintero hit his second dinger of the night, putting the Clingstones ahead for good.

Winston-Salem Dash 7 Bowling Green Hot Rods 5
Folks, Braden Montgomery could be the real deal. He was the superstar of this one, that’s for sure, with a duo of two-run shots tonight. It was his first multi-homer game of his professional career. The 22-year-old outfielder has been crushing the minors. He’s now slashing .319/.412/.564 with a .976 OPS combined for the Ballers and Dash. Samuel Zavala, who is off to a bit of a slow start, drove in two runs and had himself a nice night. The Dash tacked on an insurance run in the eighth as Wes Kath drove home Jackson Appel with a one-out two-bagger.
Old friend Jesse Scholtens, working his way back from Tommy John, hurled three frames and allowed three Hot Rod runs on five hits and two walks with 2 Ks. The righty last pitched for the South Siders in September 2023. The armbarn of Tommy Vail and Phil Fox held down the fort, but Carson Jacobs made things interesting by throwing a meatball down the middle in the top of the ninth that Émilien Pitre crushed for a two-run blast to make it 7-5, Dash. Fortunately, he was able to recover and lock it down for the win. Winston-Salem is now 10-18.

Carolina Mudcats 6, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 4 (11 innings)
Righthander Ricardo Brizuela had difficulty with the long ball tonight. All three of the runs he allowed were on dingers. Despite the tallies, he earned a quality start and a no-decision, as the Ballers couldn’t back him with enough run support to overcome the homers. Reliever Liam Paddack failed to prevent a one-out walk in the eighth from crossing the dish, giving the Mudcats a 4-3 lead.
Kanny scored the first run of the game in the second inning after Calvin Harris, who led off the inning with a double, came around to score. Then, they put up a two-spot on a two-run Caleb Bonemer oppo taco in the third. The offense had a couple of opportunities later in the contest, including a Javier Mogollón leadoff double in the sixth, but couldn’t generate any momentum.
That is until the ninth when the Ballers tied it up on singles by Miguel Santos and Ryan Burrowes, and on to bonus baseball it went. Sadly, it was all for nothing, as they couldn’t muster up anything in extras, and the Mudcats plated two in the eleventh off Aric McAtee. The Ballers lose this one and fall to 16-12 on the season.

ACL Mariners 4, ACL White Sox 2 (Monday, 8 innings)
Fans who follow Chicago’s minor leagues may be more interested in the ACL than they ever have been, as infielder Colson Montgomery made his first appearance in Monday’s loss. According to GM Chris Getz, the former No. 1 White Sox prospect is down south for a reset. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old got off to a rough start, going 0-for-3. He did work a walk in the first and eventually came around to score on a two-run blast by Adrian Gil. However, that would be it for the offense, as they went down quietly over the subsequent seven frames, accumulating only one more hit.
Jordany Chirinos got the start for the Sox. He tossed four impressive scoreless and hitless innings, surrendering only one walk while striking out one. This is the 19-year-old’s second ACL go-around. The rest of the pitching was not nearly as tidy as four arms combined to allow four runs over the last four frames.
ACL Angels 6, ACL White Sox 5 (Tuesday, 9 innings)
Colson Montgomery notched his first hit and RBI on Tuesday. He’s now 1-for-8 with a single, strikeout, and walk. My heart goes out to the kid, and I sure hope he can make the adjustments he needs. It’s probably beyond frustrating to go up to the plate, face an 18-year-old, and struggle to generate much of anything.
Righthander Venezuelan native Fabian Ysalla made his ACL debut this afternoon. The 20-year-old gave up only two hits and two walks with one K through three innings. Angel Bello and Reudis Diaz each followed with a clean frame, but the wheels fell off when 25-year-old Joe Perez gave up three runs without a hit, and he didn’t get a single out. The pen gave up three more runs and ultimately left the Sox still searching for their first victory.
On the offensive end, Marcelo Ácala had a two-out RBI single to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Jurdrick Profar added to the tally with a run-scoring double in the next frame, and after a walk to Albertson Asigen, Profar came home on a bad throw by the Angels’ backstop, giving them a short-lived 3-0 advantage. The squad would plate two more on singles by D’Angelo Tejada and Montgomery, but it wouldn’t be enough for the win.
