The San Francisco Giants have made a notable change to their coaching staff, reassigning third base coach Hector Borg to a player development position while veteran coach Ron Wotus steps in on an interim basis.
The move comes amid a difficult season for the club’s baserunning unit, an area that has consistently hindered the Giants through the first two months of the year.

While the organization has not publicly connected the decision to any single incident, several aggressive sends and costly outs on the bases have drawn attention throughout the season.
Wotus, one of the most respected figures in franchise history, will temporarily take over third-base coaching responsibilities as the organization evaluates long-term options.
The longtime Giants coach spent decades on the major-league staff before transitioning into a special assistant role following the 2021 season.
Though no longer involved in the daily grind of coaching, Wotus brings extensive experience and familiarity with the organization during a period of transition.

His return to the dugout provides a steady presence for a club looking to improve its execution in key game situations.
Despite the reassignment, Borg will remain with the Giants in a role that closely aligns with the work he performed for much of his professional career.
The 40-year-old has been part of the organization since 2008 and earned widespread respect throughout the minor league system.
Before joining the major-league coaching staff this season, Borg spent years developing young players and building a strong reputation within the organization. He also managed the Dominican Republic during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

His promotion to the big-league staff last winter was viewed as a reward for nearly two decades of service and success within the Giants’ system.
The coaching adjustment follows a season in which San Francisco has struggled to create value on the bases. The Giants have frequently found themselves erased on aggressive running plays and have generated little impact in the stolen-base department.
Those issues extend beyond one coach, but the organization clearly felt a change was needed as it looks to sharpen its fundamentals moving forward.
For now, the Giants will lean on Wotus’ experience while Borg returns to a developmental role where he has previously enjoyed considerable success. The club has indicated it will conduct a search for a permanent replacement in the coming weeks.
