Nelson Velázquez answered a three-run first inning by the Cubs with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning before Thomas Saggese and Ivan Herrera added solo shots in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to lift St. Louis to a 6-5 win in the series opener on Friday night. José Fermín added what would be an important insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth, and six relievers allowed one run on three hits over the final six innings.

Ian Happ got Chicago off to a strong start with a three-run blast in the top of the first, and Michael Busch gave the Cubs the lead again in the second with an RBI single. But starter Shota Imanaga couldn’t hold the lead, allowing five runs on five hits in his 5.1 innings to take the loss.
Right-hander Kyle Leahy (5-3) takes the ball for the Cardinals on Saturday night, entering with a 4.44 ERA and 1.579 WHIP in 10 starts and 50.2 innings. Right-hander Ben Brown (1-2) makes his fifth straight start for the Cubs after opening the season in the bullpen and holds a 2.01 ERA and 0.985 WHIP in 44.2 innings with 47 strikeouts.
