The 2026 season was always going to be a pivotal one for Brayan Rocchio. With some of the Cleveland Guardians middle infield prospects getting closer to the big-league level, Rocchio has to prove that he deserves to be in the team’s long-term plans.
Rocchio has always been a terrific defender; there’s never been any concern about that. The question has always been whether he could provide any sort of production on offense.

The switch-hitter started off the season strong, logging a .305/.360/.439 slash line in April. That said, it’s not uncommon for a player to substantially cool off after a hot start.
The good news is that this doesn’t seem to be the case for Rocchio, who is proving that his breakthrough season at the plate is no fluke. In fact, after arguably his best offensive month at the plate in April, Rocchio has been even better in May.
With one day left before the calendar flips to June, Rocchio has an .816 OPS in May, including five doubles, one home run, and one triple.

There could be a couple of reasons as to why Rocchio has seen an uptick in his production at the plate this season.

One factor could be that he’s found a consistent role in Cleveland’s lineup: hitting ninth. Stephen Vogt likes how Rocchio can set the table for the top of the lineup, and Rocchio has said in the past he feels like that spot in the batting order is like his home.
The other reason is a renewed approach at the plate; Rocchio’s plate discipline has significantly improved, leading to more contact and fewer strikeouts.
In 2025, Rocchio had a punchout rate of 20.1 percent and a walk rate of 5.7 percent. So far this season, those numbers have been 12.0 percent and 9.1 percent, respectively. His strikeout rate actually ranks in the 93rd percentile.
“I think Rocchio’s off to a great start. I mean, I think we’ve seen this progression over the last few years of him really turning into understanding who he is,” said Vogt ahead of Saturday’s game.

“His at-bat quality has been phenomenal. He’s played a great shortstop. Been really pleased with Rocchio.”
If Rocchio can continue this sustained success throughout the season, he will force the Guardians to make some tough decisions with their middle infield prospects this winter.
