Over the course of three games this weekend, the Texas baseball team won the Austin Regional by beating Holy Cross, Tarleton State and UC Santa Barbara.
Jim Schlossnagle thinks that needs to change.
Following Sunday’s 6-4 win over UC Santa Barbara that advanced UT to the super regionals for the first time since 2023, UT’s head coach suggested that the NCAA needs to change the format of its postseason. Schlossnagle pointed out that best-of-three series make up the bulk of the regular season, but series are only used to decide the super regionals and College World Series championships.
“It’s frustrating that our postseason doesn’t mirror our regular season,” Schlossnagle said. “Coach Fox always tells me, ‘I’m not sure what the question is, but I know what the answer is,’ and it’s money. If you’re going to try to get the best teams in Omaha, then the postseason means the mirror of the regular season.
“You need to be playing three weekends of three-game series. Then you find out. You don’t have these weird weekends and rain and matchups and pitching off. The whole college baseball season is about three-game series. It would be 32 three-game series, followed by 16 three-game series, followed by eight three-game series, and then we go to the World Series. Then you’ll find out who the best teams are.”
Schlossnagle predicted that the NCAA would argue that replacing the regional and super regional rounds with three weekends of three-game series would be cost-prohibitive since it pays for teams’ flights. But Schlossnagle, who has led both TCU and Texas A&M to the College World Series, retorted that “my job as a college baseball coach is to promote the sport, and I don’t think we’re doing the best to promote the sport.”
The No. 6 overall seed, Texas survived its regional challenges from UC Santa Barbara, Tarleton State and Holy Cross. Not all of the top seeds were as fortunate.
Regional hosts UCLA, Southern Miss, Nebraska were all eliminated during the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend, and national seeds like Georgia Tech, West Virginia and Florida had been pushed into a winner-takes-all game on Monday in their respective regionals. The early elimination of UCLA, which had been the overall No. 1 seed, sparked Schlossnagle’s postgame comments.
Texas will get to play a series next week, though. In the super regionals, UT will host either No. 11 Oregon or Oregon State.
