WVU Baseball was defeated 12-1 in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament against the University of Arizona Wildcats at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas Friday.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Jack Kartsonas took the ball for the Mountaineers. He went four innings with six strikeouts, allowing five earned runs.
Right-handed pitcher Raul Garayzar shut down the Mountaineer offense with six scoreless innings and did not allow a runner past second base.
The Mountaineer offense was 2-18 with runners on base and hit into three double plays.
Shortstop Mason White drove in six runs after going 4-4 at the plate with two home runs for the Wildcats.
After two quick outs in the first inning, White drilled a solo home run to left field to give Arizona an early lead.
In the third inning, White was walked and advanced to second base after a wild pitch. Catcher Adonys Guzman plated White with a base hit that barely got by the glove of second baseman Gavin Kelly.
Right fielder Brendan Summerhill and center fielder Aaron Walton started the fifth inning with two base hits before White hit his second home run to drive in three runs.
WVU brought junior right-handed pitcher Robby Porco out of the bullpen with no outs. He allowed two base hits before ending the inning.
Arizona led 5-0 through five innings.
In the sixth inning, Porco earned two outs while allowing a walk and a single. Junior right-handed pitcher Chase Meyer came into the game with runners on first and second base.
Adonys Guzman greeted Meyer with a single to score Summerhill. Second baseman Garen Caulfield drove in a run with a single to right field.
Arizona led 7-0.
The Wildcats added two runs in the seventh inning behind a double from Walton to knock Meyer out of the game. Junior left-handed pitcher Cole Fehrman entered the game.
White drove in his fifth run of the game with a single to center field in the first batter Fehrman faced.
WVU avoided the mercy rule after adding a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore utility Armani Guzman singled and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Redshirt junior infielder Chase Swain drove him in with a single to right field.
Senior right-handed pitcher Reese Bassinger entered the game in the eighth inning and worked a one-two-three inning.
Arizona brought in right-handed pitcher Colin McKinney, and he retired the side with three flyouts to center field.
The Wildcats added two runs in the ninth inning with hits from White and Adonys Guzman.
