For the third season in a row, Gibraltar/Washington Island’s baseball team is a regional champion.
The No. 2-seeded Vikings won their WIAA Division 4 regional title Wednesday at Billerbeck Field by defeating No. 3-seeded Florence, 10-4.
Gibraltar/Washington Island jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. The four-run second inning featured a two-run homer by Aaron Brey, who ended up with three of the Vikings’ nine hits. Luke Rericha added two hits.
The final three Gibraltar/Washington Island runs came home in the bottom of the sixth.
Hobbs Emerson started on the mound for the Vikings and worked into the sixth inning until reaching the 100-pitch limit to record the victory. He allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits with a hit batter while striking out six. Miles Richmond closed out the game and allowed a run without giving up a hit.
Gibraltar/Washington Island advances to Tuesday’s sectional semifinals in Rosholt, where the Vikings are scheduled to play at 10 am against Rib Lake, which won a regional title Wednesday against Laona/Wabeno.
The Vikings fell in the sectional semifinals in their previous two appearances. This year’s semifinal winner will play for the sectional championship Tuesday at 4 pm in Rosholt against the winner of the other semifinal between Athens and Marshfield Columbus Catholic.
The sectional champion advances to the state tournament semifinals June 16 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
