The Boston Red Sox added relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle, a Shaker High School graduate, to their roster before this afternoon’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
To make room for Kahnle, the Red Sox transferred shortstop Trevor Story to the 60-day injured list.
Kahnle has appeared in 18 games with a 1.40 earned-run average this season for the Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate.
Kahnle signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox in the offseason. He opted out of his contract on Tuesday, leaving the Red Sox 48 hours to promote him or trade him.
Kahnle, 36, will pitch for his sixth major-league team following stints with the Rockies, White Sox, Dodgers, Yankees and Tigers. He has a 3.61 career ERA and 17 saves in 456 games, all in relief.
He pitched for the Yankees in the World Series two years ago, taking the loss in the deciding Game 5 against the Dodgers.
