The Chicago Cubs announced yesterday that they have officially released former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Julian Merrywheather and there is a chance that he might return to Toronto.
Earlier in the week the Chicago Cubs announced that they decided to DFA’d pitcher Julian Merryweather which did not come as a complete surprise since he had been struggling lately despite a solid start to the season.

The Cubs announced yesterday that after being DFA’d, Merryweather cleared waivers and they decided to release him back into free agency as he will now look for a new home.

Merryweather started off the season on a solid hot streak for the Cubs as he had a 1.74 ERA in his first 10.1 innings pitched for Chicago but that all fell apart as of lately resulting in his release.Julian Merryweather is off to a strong start in 2025, posting a 1.74 ERA over 10.1 innings.
He has kept the ball on the ground (55.2 GB%) and limited hard contact (3.4 Barrel%).
It’s an encouraging sight to see him healthy after an injury-riddled 2024 season.
Many are now wondering if the Blue Jays should give him a chance as they could always use some help with their injured bullpen and he did prove to be a solid pitcher earlier in the season.
Blue Jays to sign Julian Merryweather to a minor league deal?
Should be interesting to see if the Blue Jays think it is worth it to go after him once again.
