PIAA baseball playoffs 2026: Breaking down Butler’s semifinal vs Owen J. Roberts – Butler Eagle

The PIAA tournaments continue Monday, and the Butler Golden Tornado are one win away from playing for their first state championship.

Here’s what to know about Butler’s (22-3) semifinal matchup against Owen J. Roberts on Monday:

PIAA baseball playoffs tickets, livestream

Livestream: Some games will be livestreamed on the NFHS Network ($13.99 for a monthly subscription) or broadcast by local or regional media outlets. The state championship will be broadcast and livestreamed on PCN. A digital subscription to PCN costs $14.99 for one month.

Tickets: According to the PIAA, tickets can be purchased for $9 in advance on hometownticketing.com and for $10 at the door

Golden Tornado’s key player: We’ve hit on Boden Lenyk and Mavrik Clement during the first two rounds, and they’ve come up huge. But ultimately, Butler’s success continues to depend on its nearly flawless pitching. And Kyle Casteel gets the chance to lead the Tornado to history — its first PIAA championship game appearance. In 17 postseason innings, the senior West Virginia commit has allowed just three earned runs and struck out 26.

Wildcats’ key player: Matt Smola can be a dangerous table-setter at the top of the lineup. In his last four playoff games, in which OJR is 3-1 with only a loss in the district championship, the second baseman is 7-of-14 with four runs, six RBIs, a walk, a double and a stolen base. He’s committed to Albright College. On the mound, expect Lucas Campbell, who went all seven innings in the first round with six strikeouts against Stroudsburg, to get the ball.

Butler wins if … Casteel does what he does best, and the offense continues to get timely hits in the later innings when the pressure ratchets up. Although … the ideal scenario for the Tornado would be for them to get up big early, pull Casteel before he reaches 76 pitches and have him available for a championship game behind Nolan Stefaniak. There might not be a team in better position to win it all in that situation. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
