The 2026 MLB trade deadline is on Aug. 3, and the Boston Red Sox are still in last place in the AL East at 27-35.

They’ve still got time to turn things around though and improve their chances of being buyers heading into the summer.

For his most recent “Red Sox Mailbag,” insider Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald was asked who some “realistic bats” might be for Boston to target this year.

Cerullo named San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez as a possibility.

“As disappointing as this season has been for the Red Sox, you could argue things are even bleaker for the Giants, who have assembled a high-priced core of veterans that collectively might not be any good. There’s two players in particular the Red Sox might want to consider adding, Casey Schmitt and Luis Arraez,” he wrote. “Arraez wouldn’t move the needle much in the power department, but the contact-hitting savant is in the mix for his fourth career batting title and has arguably been San Francisco’s best hitter overall. Arraez came into the weekend with a higher-than-you’d-think .803 OPS, led the Giants in Wins Above Replacement (2.2) and as a pending free agent should be reasonably priced as a rental. He bats left-handed, so that part isn’t ideal, but he could slot right into the lineup as the starting second baseman.”

Arraez is in his eighth MLB season and first with the Giants.

The 29-year-old made three straight All-Star teams from 2022 to 2024 and is no stranger to being traded.

Arraez made his first All-Star squad and won his first of three consecutive batting titles in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins before being sent to the Miami Marlins in January 2023.

He set career highs in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) (4.6), hits (203), home runs (10), RBIs (69) and batting average (.354), among other categories during his lone season with the Marlins and was traded to the San Diego Padres in May 2024.

Arraez led the league in hits (181) for the second time in 2025 and paces San Francisco in that category (79), as well as triples (four), stolen bases (five) and batting average (.324) this season.
