KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. is back in the lineup to begin the team’s homestand after exiting Sunday’s game early due to injury.
Witt Jr. exited Sunday’s 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins with right knee soreness. He left the game in the seventh inning with Kansas City leading 5-1.
After the game, Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Witt Jr. felt like the injury got progressively worse during the course of Sunday’s game.
Tuesday night, as the Royals return to Kauffman Stadium for their 67th game of the season, Witt Jr. will make his 67th start.
The current American League MVP favorite has played 157, 161 and 158 games in each of the past three seasons for Kansas City and has yet to miss a start this year for the Royals.
Witt Jr. currently is hitting .280 with 9 home runs, 27 RBI and 23 stolen bases. His 3.7 WAR is second-best in baseball behind only Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.
Last week, Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia missed several starts in a row as he recovered from a hamstring tweak suffered during Kansas City’s series in Texas. Garcia is also in the lineup Tuesday night for the 6:40 p.m. first pitch against the Rangers.
