ST. MARYS — The Clearfield Junior American Legion baseball team used patience at the plate coupled with a couple big hits to help create a pair of three-run innings Saturday to capture a 7-3 victory against St. Marys at Berwind Park in Elk/McKean League action.

The damage could have been much worse for the home team, as St. Marys pitchers issued 12 walks while committing four errors on defense. However, a pair of three-run innings in the second and third by the visiting Eagles proved to be enough thanks to strong pitching from the duo of Landon Brady and Jake Bloom.

St. Marys actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first off Brady when Benny Mecca scored on a two-out error.

However, the Eagles answered right back with a three-run second.

Clearfield quickly tied the game when Cooper Stone drew a leadoff walk, was bunted to second by Gerald Shipley — a play that saw both runners reach safely — and scored on a Gunnar Duckett groundout.

After a strikeout, Brady reached on a two-out error that allowed Shipley to score before Bloom doubled home Brady to make it a 3-1 game.

Brady responded with a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, then Clearfield added to its lead with another three-run inning in the third.

Phoenix Spaid and Stone drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, but both were throw out at home with Shipley batting — Spaid on a double-steal attempt and Stone trying to score on a wild pitch.

Just when it looked like St. Marys might enjoy a quick inning, Shipley drew a two-out walk and promptly scored on a a Duckett double to center. Jayce Brothers then reached on an error that allowed Duckett to score.

Brady was hit by a pitch to keep the inning going before Bloom capped the big three-run, two-out rally with a single to center that plated Brothers to put the Eagles up 6-1.

That proved to be all the offense Clearfield needed, but the Eagles did tack on a seventh run in the fourth when Duckett singled home Stone, who had reached on an error with two outs.

Duckett went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Eagles’ attrack, while Bloom was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Brady tossed six innings to get the win, allowing three runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He struck out six and walked none.

Bloom tossed a scoreless seventh to finish off the win, needing just three pitches to do so even though St. Marys got a leadoff single. That’s because Bloom promptly got a double play ball and a groundout to end the game.

Clearfield (4-1) is back in action today at home against Warren.
