Caravel used a heads-up relay to get the final out and win the 2026 DIAA Baseball Championship 2-1 over Caesar Rodney.
The Bucs were forced to go to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead when starter Garrett Bohn reached his 105-pitch limit with one out in the 7th and final inning.
Reliever Jackson Gable drew a strikeout for the second out, but then with two runners on, a wild sequence ended the game.
William Lorentz doubled to right field, bringing in Jaidrian Sanchez, but the runner who was on first was not certain whether he should stop at third, and that ultimately proved costly as Caravel threw behind him, picking him off of the bag to end the game, and the season.
It spoiled Caesar Rodney’s hopes of winning their first state baseball championship since 1975, while Caravel won their 6th title, and first under former player, and USA Baseball team member Kristen Caldwell.
She was a member of the 1998 state championship, which was Caravel’s first baseball title.
Caravel got all the offense they needed in the 6th inning, as a pair of leadoff walks proved costly for CR.
William Caldwell, Kristen’s son, and Jackson Gable earned the free passes, but were still stuck and 2nd and 3rd with two outs.
Clean-up hitter Hunter Skelton came to the plate, and laced an RBI single to left field.
Caldwell easily scored, but as CR tried to throw Gable out at the plate, the throw went wild, allowing the second, and ultimately decisive run to score.
It was the only blemish for CR’s Evan Fowler, who threw all 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits while striking out 5, including the last two batters he faced.
Bohn was just a tick better for Caravel, giving up two hits and the unearned run in the 7th, while striking out 8 batters.
Gable had a single and a walk, along with the run for Caravel.
Sanchez reached all three times for CR, including a 1-out triple in the 5th inning that was ultimately spoiled by a double play.
Caldwell’s Buccaneers got their state championship, but they’re an experienced squad with members who came just one strike away from the Little League World Series in 2021.
She’s the first woman head coach to win a DIAA Baseball Championship, and joins an elite group, including Sussex Central’s John Wells, who has won a state championship as a head coach in multiple sports, with at least one boys and one girls title.
Wells has won in football and softball.
It’s Caravel’s first baseball championship since 2017, after losing in the 2018 and 2019 finals, but it was just their first title appearance this decade.
