MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – Penn High School will look to keep their postseason run alive this weekend as they prepare to face Fort Wayne Snider on Saturday.
The Kingsmen enter the weekend with a 25-6 record and have not lost a game since May 13, when they dropped back-to-back games to New Prairie at Four Winds Field.
That series decided their fate in the NIC, but also was a turning point in the season.
“Yeah, I definitely feel like it was a big wake-up call because we had energy in the beginning but then we just let off the gas and I just think it was a big wake-up call for us to keep pushing and even though when we’re up by two runs, keep scratching more runs while we can and just try to get away with the win,” said Cayden Stockbridge, Penn pitcher.
Penn head coach Greg Dikos said the team is focused on the fundamentals heading into the weekend.
“I think we’re finally getting the idea of just hitting the ball where it’s pitched offensively. They’re not trying to do too much. Again, we don’t want heroes. I just want somebody that’s going to compete at the plate. So that’s one thing that we constantly harp on. Hit the ball where it’s pitched. Another thing, our defense has been solid all season, and that’s getting us through a lot,” Dikos said.
Penn faces Fort Wayne Snider in the Class 4A north semi-state semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at the US Steel Yard in Gary. The winner will face the winner of the earlier semifinal matchup between Zionsville and Lake Central with a chance to advance to the state finals next weekend.
Other Michiana area teams at semi-state
Penn will not be the only Michiana team competing in semi-state on Saturday. In Class 3A, NorthWood is making its second straight trip to semi-state and will face Norwell in their semifinal matchup in LaPorte.
In Class 2A, Lakeland will face Eastbrook at Oak Hill.
