BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Marlboro High’s baseball team, which registered a string of upsets to advance to the Class A state semifinals, saw its dreams of a state championship end as undefeated Long Island powerhouse Plainedge eliminated the Dukes 7-0 at Binghamton University on Friday, June 12.
Plainedge pitcher Jaxson Torres blanked the Dukes (11-12) on three hits and went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Red Devils (28-0) from Section 8 will face Section 2’s Averill Park (21-5) in the Class A New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) title game on Saturday, June 13.
Marlboro began the Section 9 baseball playoffs as the No. 7 seed with an 7-11 record. The Dukes upset No. 2 Highland, No. 3 New Paltz and top-seeded Beacon to capture the Section 9 championship.
Marlboro then beat Section 1’s Byram Hills 4-3 in a state quarterfinal-round game to advance to Friday’s state semis.
In other games involving Section 9 champions, Chester took the Class B state title with a 3-0 victory over Section 6 (Western New York) foe Medina on Saturday at the University of Binghamton after eliminating Suffolk County champion Center Moriches 5-2 on Friday on the same field in the semis.
Unbeaten Cornwall (24-0) advanced to the Class AA championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Suffolk County champion John F. Kennedy on Friday at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton. The Section 9 Dragons will face Section 3 champion West Genesee at Mirabito Stadium.
Section 9 Class AAA titlist Monroe-Woodbury (19-4), which beat Kingston 9-3 in the sectional final on May 30 at Cantine Field in Saugerties, lost its state semifinal contest 5-3 to Long Island’s Massapequa High on Friday at Union-Endicott High at Endicott.
