Monday afternoon Major League Baseball released its first All-Star balloting update, and the results were grim for the Red Sox.
With less than two weeks of voting remaining no Red Sox players are anywhere close to finishing as a finalist at their respective position. In fact, first baseman Willson Contreras is the only Red Sox player who is currently even within the top 10 vote-getters at his position.
Contreras ranks sixth among American League first baseman (177,884), behind Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr., New York’s Ben Rice, Chicago’s Munetaka Murakami, Nick Kurtz of the Athletics and Baltimore’s Pete Alonso.
Wilyer Abreu (171,026) ranks 14th among AL outfielders and Jarren Duran (111,489) ranks 20th. No other Red Sox players are high enough to rank among MLB’s published voting leaders.
Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani leads all players in voting (1,165,133) and Houston designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (1,015,768) is the leading vote-getter among AL players. The other position leaders among AL players in addition to Guerrero and Alvarez include Toronto second baseman Ernie Clement, Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero, Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., Yankees outfielders Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger and Angels outfielder Mike Trout.
Phase 1 of the All-Star vote will run through June 25, at which point the top two vote-getters at each position (top-six for outfielders) will be named finalists and Phase 2 of voting will determine which players will earn a starting spot in the All-Star Game.
