OMAHA, Neb. (WTVY) – Troy’s historic postseason run came to a tough end on Tuesday on college baseball’s biggest stage.
The Trojans, facing elimination, were once again face-to-face with the national No. 16 seed West Virginia Mountaineers in a rematch of their opening round loss at Charles Schwab Field, and unfortunately fortunes would not favor better in the second meeting as WVU went on to silence the Troy bats en route to a 12-0 shutout.
The top performance of the day offensively from West Virginia came courtesy of second baseman Gavin Kelly, who went 3-for-6 on the day with four RBIs, the majority of those coming from a 3-run shot in the top of the 6th inning to make it 6-0 Mountaineers at the time.
Troy managed just four total hits in the loss, including a pair of double from Jimmy Janicki and Houston Markham, but the toughest stat on the day for the Trojans was getting just one hit with runners in scoring position.
Despite the lopsided loss to end their season, Troy (39-31) can hold their heads high after creating history for the program at the Division I level, having achieved upsets over Miami and Florida on their way to booking their first Super Regionals trip and having that trip be hosted right at home, those Supers game featuring record-breaking crowds at Riddle-Pace Field and a two-game series shutout that booked the Trojans on their first ever trip to Omaha, and Sunday seeing Troy come back from an early multi-run deficit to knock SEC foe Ole Miss out of the tournament and getting their first win at The Greatest Show on Dirt.
While it ended in tough fashion, a foundation has been set for the Trojans that will hopefully be christened in the near future with the ultimate prize in the game.
