When several San Francisco Giants pitchers altered or declined to wear their team-issued Pride caps last week, it set off a national firestorm. Many denounced the players’ actions as disrespect or outright bigotry for the LGBTQ community; some defended their right to free speech.
The Chronicle has received thousands of reader responses to the episode, with a wide spectrum of opinions. Among impassioned fans, the controversy has raised larger questions about team leadership — and why no one intervened before the players took the field.
One decades-long fan wrote in to say that “many of my favorite players may have different political views than I do, and that’s fine. What is upsetting is to find that the organization that I have loved and supported for years is no longer an organization I can support.”
Another reader said: “Where’s Buster Posey in all this? The silence is deafening.”
One commenter on The Chronicle’s TikTok post wrote: “We need to hold management, specifically Posey, Baer, Minasian and Vitello accountable. This never should have happened.”
