Both the New York Knicks and the New York Yankees combined for a historically depressing outing on the same night.

On Saturday, the Knicks saw their season end at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, with star Tyrese Haliburton having the final say on a brief back-and-forth with Ben Stiller on social media. Later that night, the Yankees took on Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rematch of the 2024 World Series.

Led by Haliburton and Pascal Siakam, the Pacers dispatched Jalen Brunson and the Knicks, 125-108, to advance to their first NBA Finals since 2000. A few hours later, the Yankees were blasted by the Dodgers, 18-2, as Los Angeles took Game 2 of the World Series rematch at Dodger Stadium.

With the Knicks’ 17-point loss combined with the Yankees’ 16-run loss, the city of New York made history in all the worst ways. New York became the first metropolitan area to have both an NBA and MLB team lose by more than 15+ points and 15+ runs on the same day, according to OptaSTATS.

After the Yankees were dismantled by the Dodgers, star outfielder Cody Bellinger spoke on just what went wrong after an extremely rough outing in Los Angeles. “Yeah, it’s been tough,” Bellinger said of losing the first two games to the Dodgers.

“You know, obviously a very good team over there and we’ve been playing good baseball and, you know, definitely a tough few games here. But, you know, we haven’t lost confidence in the group of guys here. And, you know, the only thing we can do is get up here tomorrow and, you know, do everything we can to win.”

Additionally, Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke on the loss and shared his thoughts on just what went wrong in what was meant to be a more competitive matchup.

“Yeah, I mean, they’re tough,” the manager said. “And obviously they’ve swung it here good against us the last two nights. And, you know, we have another opportunity to go out there and try and hold them down a little bit and get after them tomorrow.

In the Yankees’ 18-2 loss, starter Will Warren gave up seven earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Speaking about Warren’s rough night, Boone added: “I think the one thing he’s shown here early in his big league career is he has learned a lot from every situation, from adversity through some success.

“You know, this is a hard game and you’re going to take your lumps sometimes. And we’ll be better for having gone through that and grow from that. And he has all the equipment to move right through this and be excellent like he’s been much of the season. So, you know, it’s no fun going through that.

“You have a day like this. But, you know, it’s part of the game sometimes, and you’ve got to wear it. And, you know, loss is a loss. You turn the page and get right after a start tomorrow.”

Similarly, after their season ended, Knicks star Brunson defended head coach Tom Thibodeau after he was criticized for his coaching style. During the postgame press conference, the star point guard was asked if Thibodeau was the right coach to lead the Knicks to a championship.

An irate Brunson replied: “Is that a real question right now? You just asked me if I believe he’s the right guy? Yes. Come on…” Brunson then left the press conference, leaving no more questions to be asked by reporters.
