This weekend, the New York Mets will hit national primetime TV via Sunday Night Baseball on NBC and Peacock, visiting the Philadelphia Phillies for the final game of a three-game weekend series. If you don’t follow the Mets regularly, it might be the first time you’ve seen the team on TV this year, and if that’s the case, you might notice something a little different about their uniforms. 

Throughout 2026, all Mets players will wear a small black patch on their uniform sleeve, just above the round Mets logo, bearing one word: “Davey.” So, what do the patches mean?

The Davey patches worn by the Mets throughout the 2026 season are in honor of Davey Johnson, a former Mets manager and member of the Mets Hall of Fame. Johnson passed away in September of 2025, at the age of 82, which left very little time in the 2025 season for the Mets to honor him. So, in the Spring of 2026, the team announced that the entirety of the 2026 season would be a tribute to Johnson, one of the most successful Mets managers of all time. 

Johnson managed the Mets from 1984-1990, and won the team their most recent World Series title, in 1986, with legendary players like Darryl Strawberry and Mookie Wilson on the squad. With nearly 600 wins to his name and a winning percentage near 60%, Johnson still ranks as the winningest manager in Mets history.

Like many managers, Johnson began his Major League Baseball career as a player, signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1965. Apart from one season abroad playing in Japan, he spent the next 13 years in Major League Baseball, playing for the Orioles, the Braves, the Phillies, and the Cubs. His time in Baltimore marked his heyday, and included World Series titles in 1966 and 1970 and three Gold Glove awards. He was selected as an MLB All-Star four times. 

Johnson’s tenure with the Mets marked his first gig as a manager, but it wouldn’t be his last. After leaving the Mets in 1990, Johnson signed on with the Reds, the Orioles, the Dodgers, and the Nationals, and even managed teams for international competition. He won a bronze medal as the manager of Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and was named MLB’s Manager of the Year twice, in 1997 and 2012.
