Despite entering the NCAA Tournament as one of the coldest teams in the field of 64, the Louisville baseball team is headed to the Super Regionals after three stellar performances in Nashville.

The Cardinals’ much-maligned stable of arms was once again sensational on Sunday night, as U of L pitching allowed just two hits in a 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Wright State.

Ethann Eberle was the man of the night. The freshman lefty was nearly unhittable, striking out a career-high 11 and allowing just two hits (one a bunt single) over 6.1 innings.

Fellow lefty Wyatt Danilowicz took it from there, working a perfect final 2.2 innings to shut the door. He inherited a pair of runners from Eberle when he entered in the sixth, but made a sensational threat to end Wright State’s only semi-serious threat of the night.

Offensively, Alex Alicea was the star of the night, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish. The third of those hits was a two-RBI single in the 8th that pushed Louisville’s lead to 6-0.

Eddie King Jr. (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B, BB), Matt Klein (2-4, RBI, 2B, BB) and Kamau Neighbors (1-3, RBI, 2B) drove in the game’s other four runs.

So could June baseball be coming back to Jim Patterson Stadium? It’s possible.

Louisville will face the winner of tomorrow’s winner-take all regional final between 16th-seeded Southern Miss and Miami. If the Golden Eagles prevail, the Cards will head to Hattiesburg next weekend. If the Hurricanes win, then The U is headed to The Ville.

It doesn’t completely excuse away the struggles of the last few weeks of the regular season, but having a healthy(ish) Alicea, Klein, Patrick Forbes and Tucker Biven pretty clearly makes a difference here.

The fact that the Cardinals won three games in three days despite some serious base-running and fielding errors, and without getting a complete explosion from its lethal offense is incredibly impressive. And, if we’re being honest, surprising. Major credit to Roger Williams and his fellas for showing up and having an unbelievable weekend on the bump.

After everything that this team has dealt with over the past three months and everything this program has dealt with over the last five years, being two wins away from Omaha feels awfully sweet.
