WASHINGTON — Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, the big-league leader in home runs, was scratched from Philadelphia’s lineup just before first pitch on Tuesday night. The Nationals had already taken the field at Nationals Park when the Phillies announced that Schwarber was out due to tightness in his lower back.
Edmundo Sosa replaced Schwarber as the designated hitter in the updated batting order, sliding into the eighth spot against right-hander Zack Littell.
Schwarber is batting .252 with 29 home runs and a .959 OPS. He played in 75 of the Phillies’ first 78 games, starting as the DH in 72 of them.
