Toledo Mud Hens 4, Louisville Bats 0 (box)

Teams are dreading playing the Detroit Tigers this season, and the same holds true for every one of their minor league affiliates. The Triple-A Hens completed a six-game sweep of the Bats on Sunday, and they are now winners of eight straight games.

Lefty Nick Margevicius got the start on Sunday and threw a very good game. He struck out six over five scoreless innings and the bullpen made an early 4-0 lead hold up.

Jahmai Jones doubled to open the bottom of the second and Akil Baddoo reached on an error with Jones scoring. Bligh Madris singled in Baddoo and it was 2-0 Hens.

Gage Workman crushed a 109.5 mph blast to right center to open the third. A walk to Jones, followed by a wild pitch and a Baddoo single made it 4-0.

The Hens didn’t do a whole lot more at the plate, but they wouldn’t need to.

Recent addition Ryan Cusick, Matt Manning, PJ Poulin, and Ricky Vanasco each spun a scoreless frame to close this one out and complete the sweep.

Workman: 1-3, R, RBI, HR, BB

Jones: 2-3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K

Margevicius (W, 3-1): 5.0 IP, 0 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 K

Coming Up Next: The Hens will take on Cleveland’s affiliate, the Columbus Clippers, on the road next week. Look for the winning to continue.

Erie SeaWolves 5, Reading Fightin Phils 0 (box)

The SeaWolves came through on Sunday for a four games to two series victory.

Garrett Burhenn got the start, and he fired five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The SeaWolves didn’t exactly swing the bats well early on either. Their best scoring chance came on a Max Anderson double in the top of the third where Jim Jarvis tried to score from first but was thrown out at the plate. However, they got to the Phils bullpen as the game unfolded.

Thayron Liranzo started them off in the top of the six by mashing his sixth homer of the season to lead off. Jake Holton drew a walk, and Roberto Campos drew a one-out walk to set the stage for a two-run double for Danny Serretti.

Troy Watson and Andrew Magno each tossed a pair of scoreless innings despite each issuing a few walks.

In the top of the ninth, Anderson singled but was erased on a Liranzo ground ball. Holton grounded out as well, moving Liranzo to second, and Eduardo Valencia mashed a two-run shot for a 5-0 lead.

Anderson: 2-5, 2B

Liranzo: 1-4, 2 R, RBI, HR, BB, K

Valencia: 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR

Campos: 2-4, R, BB

Burhenn (W, 6-1): 5.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, BB, 4 K

Coming Up Next: The SeaWolves hold a 34-17 record and are tied with the Akron RubberDucks for first place in the division, ten games clear of third place Altoona. The SeaWolves come home to welcome in the Richmond Flying Squirrels next week.

West Michigan Whitecaps 11, Dayton Dragons 3 (box)

No doubt Dayton got their fill of the Whitecaps last week as they dropped 62 runs on them over a six-game sweep, while running their winning streak to eight games. Also of note was right-handed relief prospect Tyler Mattison making a rehab appearance in the fifth inning. He allowed a hit and struck out one.

Reynaldo Castillo got the start, and he was good for four no-hit innings of scoreless ball.

Kevin McGonigle reached with one out in the top of the first on an error. The Dragons pitching staff avoided Josue Briceño as much as possible in this one. After five home runs in the series, he walked three times in this one. The first walk moved McGonigle to second. With two outs, Austin Murr walked, but a weird play ensued where Briceño drifted off second base, drawing a throw. McGonigle then broke for home but was thrown out.

Bennett Lee led off the third with a single, and after Max Clark flew out, McGonigle singled and Briceño walked to load the bases. A John Peck singled scored Lee and McGonigle for a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Luke Gold led off with a walk and rode home on Seth Stephenson’s fifth home run. The Dragons issued 11 walks in this one, so it is worth remembering that this pitching staff is not good.

In the sixth, Bennett Lee and Clark walked and McGonigle doubled them both in. A wild pitch got McGonigle to second, and Briceño struck out, but John Peck doubled in McGonigle for a 7-0 lead.

In the seventh, Stephenson singled with one out and stole second base. Bennett Lee doubled him in and then scored on a McGonigle single as the Whitecaps’ shortstop boosted his OPS to 1.423 on the year.

CJ Weins allowed a run in the seventh, but the ‘Caps took advantage of an error, a walk, and a hit by pitch to add two more runs for an 11-1 lead.

Freddy Pacheco remains on the comeback trail after nearly three years on the injured list. He allowed two runs in the ninth, one courtesy of a McGonigle error, and issued two walks before Carlos Lequerica took over to end it.

McGonigle: 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, 2 BB

Stephenson: 2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR, SB

Peck: 2-6, R, 3 RBI, 2B, K

Castillo: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K

Coming Up Next: The Whitecaps welcome in the Lake County Captains on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. ET. They hold a 36-15 record and an eight-game lead in the division.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 5, Bradenton Marauders 1 (F10)(box)

Lefty Gabriel Reyes led the way as the Flying Tigers pitching staff carved up the Marauders for 10 innings until the offense finally broke through in the 10th inning.

Reyes one-hit the Marauders over four innings with six strikeouts against two walks. After a late start to the season, Reyes has been coming on strong again. The lefty is probably due for a move to West Michigan fairly soon.

The Flying Tigers scored first in the third. Ricardo Hurtado walked to open the inning. With one out, Woody Hadeen singled. Bryce Rainer grounded into a force of Hadeen at second. A Franyerber Montilla grounder went for an error, scoring Hurtado, but that’s all they would get.

Lefty Ignacio Briceno allowed a run in the fifth that tied things up. Ronny Chalas took over for three perfect innings with four strikeouts. Ethan Sloan handled the ninth without trouble, and so it was on to extras.

Hadeen led off the 10th with a walk to join Jose De La Cruz on base. Rainer singled in De La Cruz for a 2-1 lead, and the Marauders went back to the bullpen. Montilla was out on an interference call on a little tapper as he got tangled up with catcher Derek Berg. It didn’t matter as Jackson Strong triple to right to score Hadeen and Rainer. A Stephen Hrustich sacrifice fly brought Strong home, and it was 5-1 Lakeland.

Sloan got the first two outs in the bottom half before issuing a walk. Presumably because his pitch count was high for a reliever, Chris Williams Jr. was called in and struck out the final hitter of the game.

Strong: 1-5, R, 2 RBI, 3B, K

Hrustich: 2-4, RBI

Rainer: 1-5, R, RBI, K

Reyes: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 6 K

Coming Up Next: The 30-20 Flying Tigers hold a 1.5 game lead over Clearwater in the West division. They come home to take on Daytona for six games next week.
