DuBOIS — Enduring a one-hour rain delay to start the game, then another 30-minute pause for lightning, the DuBois Major (under-12) baseball all-star team rallied twice to beat visiting Brookville 10-9 at Way Memorial Field in the District 10 opener for both teams Thursday night.

DuBois, the home team, walked it off on a wild pitch that saw Vinny Cooper score from third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

In the eight-team double-elimination bracket, both teams play again Saturday at 4 p.m., DuBois visiting St. Marys in the winners’ bracket semifinals. St. Marys blanked Kane/Smethport/Mt. Jewett, 5-0.

In an elimination game, Brookville visits Kane/Smethport/Mt. Jewett at Kane also at 4 p.m.

With rain falling, Brookville had just taken the lead after trailing 8-6 and scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to force DuBois to try to rally again.

Earlier, DuBois trailed 5-2 before scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In the end, it was the team that threw more strikes that won the game. Four Brookville pitchers combined to walk 14 batters and hit another. Brookville actually out-hit DuBois, 12-5, but the free passes doomed Brookville.

The game was stopped by lightning after Grayson Zimmerman led off the top of the sixth with a walk against DuBois’ second pitcher of the game Maddox Checchio. When action resumed, Porter Hetrick singled him to third. Then with Jack Conti up, Hetrick was thrown out by catcher Morelli trying to steal second while Zimmerman scored to cut the lead to 8-7.

Conti grounded out for the second out, but Brookville, which put together several good at-bats — five two-strike hits — still managed to rally for the lead. Tyson Bair doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scampered home with the tying run when a pickoff throw from catcher Morelli skipped into left field.

Noah Cassatt walked and dashed to third when Blake Berfield’s grounder to first was misplayed. On a 3-2 pitch from DuBois’ third pitcher Cam Gasbarre, Caleb London singled through the left side to put Brookville up 10-9.

DuBois had an answer, but had to work hard for it after two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the sixth. Conti, Brookville’s fourth pitcher, got Emerson Reiter to ground out to second before walking Xavier DeShong, who then was thrown out trying to advance to second on a wild pitch.

Brookville’s 14th walk of the game was issued to Finn Hanzely. Then it was Cooper singling Hanzely to second to set up Cam Gasbarre’s game-tying single to plate Hanzely. Cooper went to third on the play and then on a 1-0 pitch to Morelli, he scored from third when the ball got by Brookville catcher Aiden Rafferty.

DuBois scored twice in the first on Hank Benton’s two-out, two-run single. Brookville scored the next five runs with one in the second on Conti’s groundout that scored Zimmerman who led off with a single and four in the third inning, all of them coming after two outs.

Two infield singles from Nolan Donlin and Walker Lindermuth set up a Sawyer Lewis run-scoring single. Two runs came home on an infield error and Hetrick singled in the fourth to cap the four-run inning.

DuBois took an 8-5 lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth as all 12 batters went to the plate, six of them walking and one reaching on a hit by pitch. Brookville starter Sawyer Lewis walked three of the first four batters with one out. Checchio singled in two runs and Grayson Ross’ groundout drove in a run. Reiter scored on a passed ball and Brookville’s third pitcher, Walker Lindermuth walked in a run with the bases loaded.

Brookville cut the score to 8-6 with a run in the top of the fifth on a Lewis RBI single with two outs. Rafferty followed with another single, but Benton from center field threw out Lindermuth trying to score from second for the final out of the inning.
