The Rockies continue to challenge history, losing all six games on the road this week at the Cubs and Mets. Colorado lost 50 games before they won 10, with their 9-50 start two wins fewer than the next-worst 59-game start in modern major league history (the 1904 Senators and 1932 Red Sox).
The Rockies have lost all 19 series they’ve played this season.
At the Rockies Pitch newsletter, Renee Dechert argued that with Colorado’s signing of infielder Orlando Arcia this week, “the Rockies are continuing to collect marginal utility players.”
Runs were at a premium on the Giants road trip, as they scored only 11 runs in six games this week. They only allowed 13 runs, but that was enough to lose four of the games, including getting swept by the Tigers. The simplicity Steven Kennedy’s recap of Saturday’s loss at McCovey Chronicles summed things up nicely: “No runs means no win.”
The Padres vaulted over San Francisco into second place by winning home series over the Marlins and Pirates, taking two of three from each. Right-hander David Morgan made his major league debut in San Diego’s bullpen on Wednesday. He was an infielder at Orange Coast College under coach John Altobelli, who died in the 2020 helicopter crash that also killed Kobe Bryant and others. Morgan later switched to pitching and is now in the majors, as Cheri Bell at Gaslamp Ball detailed.
